Mgr Cornelius Fontem Esua Father Cornelius was born on the 2nd of July 1943 in Mbetta LebiAlem in the South West Province of Cameroon, of Michael Esua and Felicitas Nsunya, all of blessed Memory. He was Baptised 24 days later on July 26th 1943 by Rev. Fr. Arnold Kerkvliet MHM.
In 1953 at the age of 10 he was admitted at St. Theresa Catholic primary school Mbetta. He completed in 1959.
From January 1960 to June 1964 he attended St Josephs College SASSE as a minor seminarian. He started his Major seminary training in the BIGARD Memorial Seminary Enugu in Nigeria, where he studied Philosophy from 1964 to 1967.
He then continued his priestly formation in the Pontificio Collegio Urbano
"de Propaganda Fide" in Rome where he read Theology from 1967 to 1971.
The Right Reverend Pius Suh Awa, then Coadjutor Bishop of Buea, ordained him priest on December 29, 1971 at Mbetta. He was appointed to St. Joseph's Parish Mamfe then in the Diocese of Buea in January 1972 where he served as Curate till September.
From September 1973 to June 1977 he pursued further studies in the Pontifical Biblical Institute Rome and obtained a licentiate in Sacred Scripture and was admitted to do a doctorate.
In 1974 he studied Hebrew, Biblical History and Archaeology in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
He also holds a Bachelor's Degree in Divinity from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. From 1977 to 1982 he was appointed Formator in Saint Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary Bambui.
On October 10, 1982 he was named Bishop-elect of the Diocese of Kumbo, and was consecrated on 8th of December 1982, Feast of the Immaculate Conception by the Most Reverend Donato Squissiarini Titular Archbishop of Tiburnia who was then Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
From the 10th of April to the 8th of May 1994 he served as one of the Synod Fathers at the Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops. He was Vice President of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon from 1997 to 2000 and became President in May 2000 up till 2004.
Father Cornelius has equally served in some Discasteries of the Roman Curia. He has been member of the Pontifical Council for Inter Religious Dialogue. He has also been member of the Catholic-Methodist International Commission in the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity.
He is a Biblical Scholar and for 12 years, from 1990 to 2002, he served as a member of the executive committee of the Biblical Federation (formally known as the World Catholic Federation for the Biblical Apostolate).
On Tuesday December 7th 2004 barely three weeks to his 33rd Anniversary in the Call to the Priesthood, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Bamenda, by His Holiness Pope John Paul II.
He speaks and writes his mother-tongue Lekongo Mbo, English, French, Italian, and German.
